Grey Island Systems International Inc (TSX: GIS) is North America’s first provider of ‘real-time’ Internet-based GPS/AVL and passenger information solutions targeted to government and enterprise fleets. Its InterFleet and NextBus brands were independently launched commercially in 1998.

Real-time in Grey Island’s use of the phrase means on average 6 to 10 vehicle status updates per minute on a live screen. This solution was available in 1998. The industry average update rates have been typically measured in the order (multiple) minutes. InterFleet is capable of and has been used to provide second-by-second reporting for special events such as international rally car racing or for clients for which bandwidth and data transfer costs are not restricted.

In the universe of highly fragmented me-too GPS/AVL solutions, Grey Island has distinguished itself as a dominant provider to public sector fleet operations. This is the result of focused and determined application development directed towards the specialized needs of local and state/provincial government. The success of the strategy is measured by the numerous wins of the rich and robust InterFleet in highly competitive RFP processes.

Similarly, NextBus has been implemented in over 40 transit operations making it the most widely used real-time passenger information system in North America.

Headquartered in Toronto, with over 55 employees in offices around North America, Grey Island has garnered recognition from Industry groups such as the Profit 100 (Canada’s fastest growing companies) and Deloitte and Touche Technology Fast 50.
